On December 5, 1969 a F-4C Phantom, call sign “Boxer 22”, was shot down over Vietnam, forcing Capt. Benjamin Danielson (pilot) and 1st. Lt. Woodrow J. Bergeron Jr. (weapons system officer) to eject over hostile territory. The resulting rescue attempts would become the largest rescue mission during the War in Vietnam, involving a total of 336 sorties, 242 of which were flown by A-1 Skyraiders Combat Search and Rescue helicopter escorts (call sign “Sandy”).
