The Wright R-1820 Cyclone 9 is a 9 cylinder radial engine developed by Curtiss-Wright, used on a variety of aircraft in the 1930’s through 1950’s.

 

The R-1820 was at the heart of many famous aircraft including early Douglas airliners (including DC-1, DC-2, and the first civil versions of the DC), and every wartime example of the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and the Douglas SBD Dauntless bombers.
