General Information

The PT-13 & PT-17 was produced in numbers by Boeing Aircraft from 1936 to 1944.  It originally flew on 26 Nov 1934.  The PT-13 was typical of the biplane primary trainer used during the late 1930’s and WWII.  Whereas it was powered by a Lycoming engine, the same airplane with a Continental engine was designated the PT-17, and with a Jacobs engine, the PT-18.  A later version which featured a cockpit canopy was designated the PT-27.  Many were sold to the public as the aircraft were retired from active duty.  It is powered by a   220 horsepower Continental R-670-5 radial engine.  Between 1936 and 1944, Boeing built 8,584 Kaydets, in all versions, plus the equivalent of 2,000 more in spares.

Specific Information

The Heritage Flight Museum Stearman was donated to the museum by Bill Anders in August of 2000.  It does most of its flying in the summer, although Bill and Greg got a new appreciation for the great Alaska bush pilots (such as the Wien family, Richard, Merrill, and their dad Noel, the original Alaska bush pilot) as we had to bring it to Orcas from Carson during the first cold snap in the fall of 2000.
